Before & After ~ A beautifully restored stair hall. These photos by Vinny DiPonio show what a large difference can be made by combining several relatively small changes, like putting back an appropriate door and light fixtures, stripping and refinishing painted trim around the door, and removing inappropriate flooring to expose and restore the original wood.
Vinny found the period door at an architectural salvage shop. It is appropriate to the house in style and age and a vast improvement over the 1960s replacement door that was there when he bought the house. Historic flooring usually remains under later layers of flooring and is often in good enough condition to be restored.
Good restoration work does not have to involve massive and expensive efforts, as this space proves in spades.
“Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” was written to help homeowners achieve their restoration goals, whether they are doing a massive whole-house rehab or a more most project like this one.
