Minton Fairies Tiles

1870s Minton fairies tiles made in Staffordshire, England. Decorative ceramic tile was used in many American homes in the later 19th century. A number of American potteries were established during the period to supply the growing domestic market, but enormous quantities of tile were still imported from the UK.

Here, nine 1870s Minton 6” x 6” tiles in four transfer-printed designs with a Fairies motif are arranged into an 18” square. Such tiles could be used lineally for a fireplace surround or arranged into larger patterns for walls or wainscoting. Minton and other companies produced tiles with many related motifs like this, including themes from literature and nature.

This is one of the many images used to illustrate the use of ceramic tile in historic houses in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
