One of my favorite houses in New Orleans ~ a Gothic Revival gem.
New Orleans is one of American’s most architecturally significant cities, filled with wonderful historic houses and commercial buildings. It is also one of America’s most vulnerable cities, precariously holding back the mighty Mississippi with levees and hoping the next hurricane isn’t another Katrina. The fact that the city has preserved so many of its wonderful historic buildings in spite of its precarious situation is remarkable.
One of the highlights of my trip to New Orleans to photograph houses for the book was stumbling upon this Gothic Revival gem! Researching the house later, I found a 1960s photo showing it intact but in rough condition. The restoration work done to the house is excellent and one of NOLA’s treasures is looking lovely and well cared for today.
This photo is one of the 21 color images used to illustrate the Gothic Revival style in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
