The Charles S. Homer Jr. Cottage was designed by architect John Calvin Stevens in the Shingle Style and built at Prout’s Neck in Maine in 1901. Homer was a brother to artist Winslow Homer, who had a cottage and studio built nearby, as did their brother Arthur.
This beautiful photo was taken by noted architectural photographer Dave Clough in 2013 for a book project that I was invited to participate in that year. Maine State Historian, Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr. asked me to co-author the book with him and architect Christopher Glass.
The result of that collaboration was “Homes Down East, Classic Maine Coastal Cottages and Town Houses,” published by Tilbury House Publishing in 2014. This photo was used for the cover of the book.
Following publication of “Homes Down East,” the publisher asked if I had any ideas for another book. I did, and the seed for “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” was planted. Having Dave Clough join the project as photographer for the 13 featured houses in the book added enormously to the quality of the finished product. https://davecloughphotography.com/
