I recently learned that this gorgeous National Register listed Gothic Revival house is gone. It has been demolished. Listing on the Register does not protect a building. Only a local historic preservation ordinance or a preservation easement on the deed can prevent demolition. The area is zoned for commercial strip development and a self-storage facility or the like will probably replace the house.
The Gothic Revival and Greek Revival styles emerged with the early 19th century embrace of Romanticism. The popularity of the Gothic Revival style in America was advanced by the publication of numerous examples of the style in Andrew Jackson Downing’s architectural plan books, starting with Cottage Residences in 1842 (written with Alexander Jackson Davis).
Gothic Revival is one of 25 historic architectural styles described and illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.” Understanding the style of a house and will help you understand which features are character-defining so you can prioritize their preservation.
