The 1905 Benjamin B. Gonder House is Queen Anne with a touch of Tudor Revival style.
At the end of the Victorian era, many wonderful houses were built that combined elements of the popular styles of that era with elements of the emerging styles of the new century. This is a lovely example in Strasburg, PA. It is essentially a Queen Anne form with detailing in the Tudor Revival – the half timbered gables with pebble dash between the timbering. The form of the fabulous paired porch posts is “Jacobethan,” a mash up of Elizabethan and Jacobethan era elements that is a variant of the Tudor Revival style.
Understanding the style of a house is the essential first step in developing a restoration plan that prioritizes the preservation and restoration of character-defining features while making changes necessary for modern life in an old house.
Queen Anne and Tudor Revival are two of the 25 styles and types illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
