A lovely transitional Greek Revival to Italianate style house in New Orleans’ Garden District.
I was in New Orleans for the Society for Historic Archeology conference in 2018 and was determined to get out and get photos for the architectural styles examples in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
With only a few hours available, I power-walked to and through the French Quarter and Garden District snapping photos of good examples of different styles. This house stood out to me as being quintessentially of New Orleans with its tropical pink and white color scheme, Classical architectural features, and lovely cast and wrought iron detailing.
Cast iron was the plastic of the 19th century – the ubiquitous modern material that could be used for 1001 purposes. It was used for everything from steam locomotives to ornament for houses. It is a character-defining feature and has to be cared for to maintain its integrity and charm.
Greek Revival and Italianate are two of 25 styles and types illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House.”
