Colorful Italianate Villa

The Italianate style arrived in the U.S. before the Civil War and took off after the war, with examples of the style appearing in all parts of the United States. Queen Victoria’s use of the style for her country villa, Osborne House, on the Isle of Wight popularized the style in the U.K and U.S.

This colorful Italianate villa is the C. Sydney and Emily Smith House was built in 1877. It is one of the 13 Featured Houses photographed by noted architectural photographer David Clough and presented between the how-to chapters of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
