Classic Craftsman Chicago Bungalow

Classic Craftsman style Chicago Bungalow.

The Craftsman style bungalow spread across the US in the early 20th century, providing housing for millions of middle-class Americans. In the expanding trolley suburbs of Chicago a particular type of bungalow evolved to suit the long narrow urban lots laid out by planners. More than 80,000 Chicago Bungalows were built!

The Kowalski-Policht House is a Chicago Bungalow built in 1924. The current owners, Laurie and Howard, have done a wonderful job or restoring the house, including the 29 art glass casement windows. They have also replaced a 1960s kitchen with a more compatible new kitchen, replumbed the bathroom while saving historic tile and fixtures, cleaned the exterior masonry, and added air conditioning.

The house is one of the 13 Featured Houses photographed by noted architectural photographer David Clough and presented between the how-to chapters of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

Winner of the MWPA 2020 Excellence in Publishing Award, the 720-page best-selling hardcover book is available in bookstores nationwide and from online retailers.
