Before & After ~ Remarkable Recent San Francisco Restoration.
These photos are from designer Thomas Leach (@handdrawnsanfrancisco www.thomasleach.com) and is his most recent restoration project in San Francisco.
This lovely house in the Italianate style underwent a dramatic restoration after having its façade stripped of ornament and modernized with a stucco treatment decades ago. Leach says, “We used the shadow lines uncovered beneath the stucco that gave some hint of the design before. We also studied existing façades from the same architects built in the late 1800s and copied those architectural details in places where we really didn’t know what used to be there. We did our best to re-create the façade given no photograph was available to reference.”
Products used were from: Lorna Kollmeyer Ornamental Plaster (@lornakollmeyer), Benjamin Moore Paints, and Decorators Supply Company (@decoratorssupply).
“Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” was written to help people who want to restore a house with sensitivity to its character-defining features – whatever era it comes from. Few of us will ever undertake a project of this scope, but we can certainly take inspiration from it!
