This wonderful example of the Queen Anne style in York, PA sits across the street from the well-known Hench House (known as the Lady Linden on Airbnb), which is on the cover of Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
This house has an expansive porch with a masonry base that extends across the front and wraps around the side. On the façade, the two projecting bay windows above the porch are capped by the deep eave of the hipped roof. The scroll-cut and pebble-dash ornament in the dormer gable only hints at the elaboration of the broad side gable facing the cross street at the left, which rises above a bay window set between two recessed balconies.
Understanding the style of a house is the essential first step in developing a restoration plan that prioritizes the preservation and restoration of character-defining features while making changes necessary for modern life in an old house.
More than 50 full color photos are used to illustrate the Queen Anne style in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
