Bangor, Maine Colonial Revival ~ Before.
The Harry L. Arnold House was designed by locally prominent Victorian era architect Wilfred Mansur and built in 1899. It has been neglected in recent years and is suffering significant water damage to the foundation that has threatened the structural integrity of the house.
Planning is underway to fully rehabilitate the house, preserving its character-defining features and preparing it for another decade of useful life as a high-end rental property. I will be the historic consultant for the project. I look forward to sharing an “after” photo with you when the project is done.
America’s most enduring residential architectural style, the Colonial Revival got its start in the late 19th century and has never really gone away. A product of the late Victorian period. Looking back to the Georgian, Federal, and Greek Revival styles, it combined elements from all of them, often with elements of Victorian era styles.
Understanding the style of a house helps identify which features are character-defining so their preservation can be prioritized.
Colonial Revival is one of the 25 styles and types illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
