This partial leftover roll of 19th century wallpaper is in excellent condition. It is a prime candidate for digital reproduction, as it will not need extensive digital restoration before printing.
Digital printing is a relatively new option for reproducing historic wallpapers and can often provide custom work at a lower cost than traditional methods. Computer software is used to recreate and color-correct historic patterns from photographs of old wallpaper or from wallpaper fragments—which can then be digitally printed onto rolls of paper. The process is even easier with a surviving partial roll of wallpaper, as the digital image will need little work.
Evergreene Architectural Arts in Brooklyn, NY is one of the firms reproducing historic wallpapers digitally, sometimes combining digital printing with traditional methods to achieve certain historic finishes and effects. They generously provided images of their production process for “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
The processes for screen printing, wood block printing, and digital printing reproduction wallpapers are all illustrated in Chapter 18.
