Historic Houses & Collections

Many historic house owners are collectors of a wide range of antiques and collectibles. Displaying collections can be a lot of fun and unlike museum houses interpreted to a specific time period, we are free to mix pieces from different periods.

Switching it up seasonally is a great way to enjoy different parts of your collection(s). I decided to display a couple pieces of my 1940s Brad Keeler Lobsterware collection on the dining room table for the summer. Keeler was a California potter who developed the red glaze he named “Ming Dragon Blood” which is used on the lobsters.

The trestle table is also from the 1940s, constructed from a single 34 1/2″ wide white pine board by New Hampshire craftsman Rodney Woodward. He made it for the dining room of my “adopted grandmother” Topsy Samuelson. I picked up the hand block printed runner in India. The Victorian silverplate candlesticks were an auction find in the 1990s.

The restoration of this room, the original 1827 kitchen in Whitten House (including reconstruction of the missing cooking hearth and brick oven), is an example project in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

The 720 page award-winning and best-selling hardcover book is available in bookstores nationwide and from online retailers.

Signed and personalized copies are available directly from the author in the shop on this site, https://yourhistorichouse.com/shop/.
