Abandoned but beautiful Spanish Colonial Revival house.
At the end of the nineteenth century, there was a turn away from the highly decorative styles of the late Victorian period. Machine-made and mass-produced ornamentation drew particular criticism, and a return to a simpler aesthetic developed.
In architecture, the movement found expression in several romantic revival house styles that were built in great numbers across the U.S. The Spanish Colonial Revival style, also called Mediterranean Revival, was among them.
As in this house, many of these houses shared their general form and fenestration pattern with the Colonial Revival style but were clad in stucco with clay tile roofs and detailing drawn from the contemporaneous Craftsman style, like the modillions at the eaves on this house. The arched openings of the porch can also be found on Mission style houses of the period. The wonderful leaded glass windows might be found in any of these styles. Please note, I do not identify the locations of abandoned houses to protect them from vandalism.
