Colorful Italianate Villa

David Clough photo.

A colorful Italianate villa in Thomaston, Maine.

The Italianate style arrived in the U.S. before the Civil War and took off after the war, with examples of the style appearing in all parts of the United States. Queen Victoria’s use of the style for her country villa, Osborne House, on the Isle of Wight popularized the style in the U.K and U.S.

The C. Sydney and Emily Smith House in Thomaston, Maine was built in 1877. It is one of the 13 Featured Houses photographed by noted architectural photographer David Clough and presented between the how-to chapters of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

The 720 page award-winning and best-selling hardcover book is available in bookstores nationwide and through online retailers.
