Before & After ~ Arson Edition.
The beautiful Second Empire style Charles A. Jordan House in Auburn, Maine before it was damaged in an arson fire in 2019 and in July 2021.
Although it has both fire and water damage, it can be restored and the owners are working toward that goal. The house has been stabilized and secured against the elements. Quick efforts to stabilize a damaged structure and to keep vandals and the elements out (without trapping moisture in) are critical to preventing further damage and making eventual restoration possible. I got a call from a local architect working with the owners of the Jordan house several days after the fire, seeking advice on how to properly secure it. They’ve done a good job of it. I stopped by yesterday, hoping to see the restoration underway but it has not started yet…
Second Empire is one of 25 historic architectural styles described and illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.” Precautions to avoid accidental fires are outlined in the book. You may not be able to stop an arsonist, but you can avoid preventable fires.
