The 1818 Ruggles House in Columbia Falls, Maine.
I will be heading to Washington County, Maine for a vacation soon and a visit to the Ruggles House is on my agenda. The Federal style house was built by Boston housewright Aaron Sherman and woodcarver Alvah Peterson for Thomas Ruggles. Located on the remote Down East coast of Maine, the house had all the finesse and detail of a Beacon Hill mansion. Its interior detailing is exquisite and the flying staircase is exceptional. It is furnished primarily with Ruggles family pieces.
The house was restored in the 1930s and opened as a museum in 1950. I have been visiting periodically since I was a teenager. There is always a detail I missed seeing before. https://ruggleshouse.org/
