Classic American Foursquare

The American Foursquare may be the most common historic house type in the nation. Available in kit form and site-built by the tens of thousands between c. 1900 and c. 1930, they can be found from California to Maine, where this example is located. While their details can draw from a variety of styles, their essential form is a cube with a pyramidal roof. The c. 1913 example shown has Queen Anne detailing and an attached Foursquare carriage house.

What type or style of historic house suits your life? This question is explored in Chapter 3 of Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners. Finding the right house for how you live can greatly reduce how much you need to change the house, saving time, money, and historic character!

The American Four-Square is one of 25 historic architectural styles and types described and illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
