A touch of Gothic Revival. This house is essentially a vernacular small Cape. It is a very common historic house type along the portion of the Maine coast above Mount Desert Island and Bar Harbor But this one is elevated well above the average example by the gabled Gothic Revival entry bay projecting from the simple façade.
The popularity of the Gothic Revival style followed the publication of examples of the style in Andrew Jackson Downing and Alexander Jackson Davis’s architectural plan book “Cottage Residences” in 1842.
The scroll-cut barge board at the eaves of the steeply pitched gable and the pointed arch lancet window with diamond panes are common features of the style. The flush board siding stone sometimes appears on houses of this style, but vertical board and batten siding is more commonly found.
Understanding the style of a house and will help you understand which features are character-defining so you can prioritize their preservation.
Gothic Revival is one of 25 historic architectural styles described and illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
