I am in Boston for the night and am thinking about the stunning Eustis Estate in nearby Milton, MA.
The Eustis Estate is a spectacular English Queen Anne style mansion a short distance outside Boston. Designed by architect William Ralph Emerson and completed in 1879, the house was a showcase of Aesthetic Movement interiors when built.
Although not well known today, Emerson was a masterful architect at the cutting edge of the field in the 1870s and 80s. A year after the Eustis mansion, he designed Redwood, considered the first Shingle Style cottage.
After the property was acquired by Historic New England, the firm I used to work for was brought in to do microscopic paint analysis to determine what the original interior finishes had been. It was one of my favorite projects to work on and remains one I am very proud to have played a role in.
The paint analysis process is described in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” with before and after photos.
