A Second Empire gem in Cherryfield, Maine. The Frank Campbell House was designed and built by master builder/architect Charles A. Allen in 1875 and is one of a number of outstanding Victorian era houses in the village of Cherryfield.
Many examples of the Second Empire style are included in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.” Built from Maine to California, the style is identified primarily by its Mansard roof and shares many features with the Italianate style.
What are your house’s character-defining features? Chapter 2 will help you answer this question and give you the information you need to prioritize the preservation of the most important features.
Understanding the style of a house is the essential first step in developing a restoration plan that prioritizes the preservation and restoration of character-defining features while making changes necessary for modern life in an old house.
