Before and After ~ Federal style plantation house. This dramatic restoration shows Laurietta, a Federal style house in Mississippi. It illustrates well what is possible with a thoughtful and careful approach to restoring historic houses.
These southern houses are now recognized as the work of skilled enslaved craftsmen in many cases, monuments to those who built them and whose labor paid for them, as much as those who owned them.
Original materials and features were retained and restored where possible and missing elements were replaced with compatible materials. The new owners/restorers were fortunate to find that a regional preservation group had salvaged and stored a number of architectural elements from the house – when it appeared the house would not be saved. These were returned to the house during the restoration. You can read about the project and see more before and after photos on the Country Living website: http://ow.ly/G0p750zvm1H
Most restoration projects are not this dramatic but are no less meaningful to the owners and community.
