First-hand experience… I was the historic consultant on the rehabilitation of a former Victorian hotel being rehabilitated for affordable senior housing. The hotel dining room would be the residents’ common space.
The Gerald Hotel opened in 1900 and was famous for its highly ornamented interior. It later spent decades as a furniture store. As originally decorated by Boston decorator Harry C. Aikens, the dining room was a warm and bright space, a character completely lost over time.
Following the documentary research on the room, our firm took paint samples and analyzed the multiple layers to determine the original scheme and subsequent treatments.
Here I am working with decorative paint restorers Tony Castro and Company to create a sample area of the restoration treatment for review by the owners. This treatment, duplicating the original red, cream, and gold appearance, was approved and the room restored to its original appearance.
