The elegance of the Colonial Revival style is fully displayed at Dark Harbor House, originally the George and Ellen Philler Cottage on an island in Maine. Designed by architect Frederick L. Savage for the Philadelphia banker and his wife and built in 1896.
The 10,000 sq. ft. “cottage” had been operated as an inn for decades and had serious structural and foundation issues from water infiltration before its recent restoration and return to use as a single-family summer home. With a new foundation and a top-to-bottom restoration, it prepared for the 21st century. It is one of Maine’s finest Victorian era summer cottages.
Photographer David Clough’s images capturing the beauty of the restored house are presented with historic photos and photos taken before and during the restoration process.
It is one of 13 restored houses shot by Clough and featured between the how-to chapters of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
The award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book is now in stores and available from online retailers.
