1920s Dutch Colonial Revival

This fine 1920s Dutch Colonial Revival style house is located in Portland, Maine.

America’s most enduring residential architectural style, the Colonial Revival got its start in the late 19th century and has never really gone away. A product of the late Victorian period, it looked back to the Georgian, Federal, and Greek Revival styles -freely combining elements from them all.

Variations on the style include the Dutch Colonial with gambrel roof and Spanish Colonial Revival with elements drawn from the colonial period in the southwest and California. This is a lovely example of a Dutch Colonial Revival style house.

Understanding the style of a house will help you identify which features are character-defining so you can prioritize their preservation.

Colonial Revival is one of the 25 styles and types illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

The award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book is available in bookstores nationwide and from online retailers.
