Queen Anne and Tudor Revival

A blend of the Queen Anne and Tudor Revival styles.

At the end of the Victorian era, many wonderful houses were built that combined elements of the popular styles of that era with elements of the emerging styles of the new century. This is a lovely example in Bangor, Maine.

It is essentially a Queen Anne house with detailing in the Tudor Revival style. Elements of the Queen Anne style include the overall form, projecting and recessed upper story balconies, full-width porch with turned balusters, and two-story rounded bay window. The predominant Tudor Revival element is the half timbering and stucco wall surface.

Understanding the style of a house is the essential first step in developing a restoration plan that prioritizes the preservation and restoration of character-defining features while making changes necessary for modern life in an old house.

Queen Anne and Tudor Revival are two of the 25 styles and types illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
