The castellated Amos F. Gerald House was built of custom manufactured concrete block in 1910.
Houses built in exotic and romantic styles were coming back into fashion around that time, having had a previous period of popularity in the mid-19th century. In the early 20th century, most romantic and fanciful houses were in the Tudor Revival style and related variations.
The style of this house looks back further in history for its inspiration, to the medieval period. Gerald was an inventor and promotor, known as The Electric Railway King of Maine. He built the state’s first electric power plant in 1886 and was responsible for establishing multiple trolley lines. His house was built to promote his new concrete block business.
