Historic Wallpaper can be restored! These before-and-after images are of a conserved nineteenth-century William Morris wallpaper in Speke Hall, Liverpool, UK. They show what is possible in the hands of a skilled conservator.
Wallpaper came into use in the seventeenth century and became widely used in the early nineteenth century. It remained very popular through the Victorian era and into the twentieth century. This restoration treatment is not for every old wallpaper (it is expensive), but it is possible and may be appropriate for rare surviving papers or those with important historic associations. In other cases, a reproduction paper may be a good option.
