This Italianate door hood with beautifully hand-carved brackets, a perfect example of Victorian exuberance, survived when this house was largely stripped of its trim and ornamentation and covered with asbestos siding after World War II.
Fortunately, ghosts of the missing trim elements remained in the paint under the asbestos siding and historic photos provided more information allowing the house to be restored to its historic character.
By today’s standards, the quality of craftsmanship and materials used on this middle-class house of the 1860s is astounding.
This project is an example case in Chapter 13, Exterior Trim and Windows, in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
