Stick Style and Modern Gothic

An 1879 Stick Style house with Modern Gothic detailing.

The Stick Style shares many features with the Queen Anne style but has several distinctions. It was named by noted architectural historian Vincent Scully, who traced its development in the mid-19th century in his influential 1955 book, The Shingle Style and the Stick Style. The book is still in print and well worth owning if you have an interest in Victorian era architecture.

Among the stylistic influences that led to the Queen Anne style and its variants was the “Modern Gothic” movement promoted by Charles Eastlake and other British designers of the 1870s. The detailing on this house draws heavily from the ideas and design elements of Eastlake and Modern Gothic, which differs from the earlier and later versions of the Gothic Revival movement.

Understanding the style of your house is an important first step in planning a restoration or rehabilitation.

Stick Style is one of 25 styles and types illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

The award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book is available in bookstores nationwide and from online retailers.
