Perfectly balanced Italianate and Second Empire. The Second Empire style shares all its architectural features with the Italianate style except its definitive Mansard roof.
Typically, when these houses have towers, the towers also feature Mansard roofs. However, on this Cherryfield, Maine house, the tower is a purely Italianate campanile with the style’s classic triple-mulled arch-topped windows in the top story and a shallow hipped roof. The size of the tower gives this house as much Italianate character as Second Empire.
Many houses have features from more than one style but usually one style is predominant in the composition. Here, the two are balanced to a degree that the house has to be considered to represent both styles, a nicely balanced combination of the two.
