Castle Tucker in Wiscasset, Maine was built as a Federal style mansion in 1807 and remodeled with a glazed Italianate style piazza in 1859. It is a wonderful example of how houses can evolve over time.
The house was home to members of the Tucker family from 1858 until 2003. It is now a museum house owned by Historic New England containing the accumulated belongings of four generations of Tuckers. Museum houses can be a valuable source of inspiration and ideas for restoring your historic house. This one is well worth a visit, https://www.historicnewengland.org/property/castle-tucker/
Many houses have changed over time, like Castle Tucker. Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” explores how to identify such changes.
Understanding the evolution of a house is the first step in planning a rehab/restoration project that retains the historic character of the house.
