1899 House with 1946 Kitchen

This 1899 Shingle Style house got a new kitchen in 1946 which remains in use with updated appliances in 2022.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting with the owners of this Portland, Maine house, which is largely intact from 1899 except for the kitchen, bathrooms, and a sun porch with martini bar built in 1946. The result is a wonderful layering of historic periods that shows how interior styles and uses evolved in the 20th century. I’ll be doing another post on the martini bar at a later date.

Kitchen and bath design for historic homes is covered in detail in Chapter 3 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.” One of the points made in the chapter is that historic houses have usually had their kitchens updated at least once already and sometimes these later (but still old) kitchens are worthy of preservation themselves. This is an excellent example of that.
