The 1887 Hale House

Before & After ~ The 1887 Hale House in Los Angeles, CA.

Someone commented on a recent post about another large Queen Anne house that was relocated to save it from demolition, “I would like to read an account of how they “relocated” this structure. A small house or cottage, yes, but a huge “pile” of a bldg?” I suggested a Google search for readily available images of it being moved to assuage his doubts.

His disbelief reminded me of the Hale House, which has been moved twice! It was first relocated several blocks before 1906 and then moved again in 1970 to save it from demolition. It is now a centerpiece of Heritage Square, a living history museum of historic Los Angeles buildings.

The eight historic structures located at the museum, constructed during the Victorian Era, were saved from demolition and serve as a perfect background to educate the public about the everyday lives of Southern Californians from the close of the 19th Century into the early decades of the 20th Century. The museum’s website can be found at: https://heritagesquare.org/

Houses of all sizes can be relocated and sometimes the only way to save a house is to move it. All aspects of home restoration are covered in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
