A classic Federal style center chimney Cape overlooking the water near Fort William Henry at Pemaquid, Maine. Settled in 1628, Pemaquid was a major regional flashpoint in the colonial era conflicts between English and French settlers, and between the English and the local Native population for much of the following century.
The “Cape Cod” or “Cape” house form (or type) is associated with New England and can be found with detailing in a variety of styles – attesting to its long period of popularity. Earlier examples often have large center chimneys serving three to five fireplaces and a brick oven, like this early 19th century example.
Understanding the form or type and style of a house and will help you understand which features are character-defining so you can prioritize their preservation.
Federal style is one of 25 historic architectural styles described and illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
