Exceptional Craftsman Style Bungalow

An exceptional Craftsman style bungalow in Birmingham, Alabama. While the word Bungalow comes from India, the architectural influences that appear with the type are more varied.

Some architects looked toward the forms and details of traditional wood-framed Japanese buildings for inspiration, as can be seen in this really wonderful example with its pagoda form. Japanese influence in Craftsman style homes is most often seen in the major works of architects like Greene and Greene in California. This little house shows that those stylistic influences also sometimes made their way into much more modest homes – with outstanding results.

I wish I had been able to get a shot from a higher elevation to really show the rooflines. Next time I am in Birmingham, I’m going to find a ladder.

Many examples of the Craftsman style can be found in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
