Before & After ~ the Van Liew-Suydam House, an Italianate Classic.

This wonderful Italianate farm house in Franklin Township, New Jersey is a great example of what a difference a period appropriate paint scheme can make to the character of a historic house.

Many Victorian era houses had been painted white like this one was in the 1960s photo shown here. Even though largely intact, the original character of the house was diminished by the paint scheme that muted rather than emphasized the characteristic trim elements.

Houses like this one were built across the US during the second half of the 19th century, providing stylish and comfortable houses for middle-class families. Many were neglected in the 20th century.

Now, “empty nest” baby boomers and millennials are moving back to historic communities in large numbers and houses like this are being restored and rehabilitated for 21st century life.

“Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” was written to help those people, and anyone else who wants to restore a house with sensitivity to its character-defining features.

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our shop, YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.
