Light in the Night

A Light in the Night. Finding appropriate exterior lighting for historic houses can be a challenge. For houses built before the advent of electric light, hanging a lantern by the door was the most common method used – with candles or oil lamps.

Fixtures are widely available with faux candles for candle bulbs and do an okay job of feeling appropriate for an early house. This fixture at Colonial Williamsburg is more subtle and more effective, using a hidden bulb in the top of the fixture to shine down on a wax candle.

“Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” is filled with suggestions for more subtle and more effective methods to integrate modern conveniences into historic houses.

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our shop, YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.

Our shop also carries select preservation and restoration titles by other authors including the classic “A Field Guide to American Houses.” Save with our multi-book combo packs!
