Italianate style “Norlands,” Livermore, Maine. Built in 1867 to replace an earlier house that burned, Norlands was home of Israel and Patty Washburn.
Their seven sons, born here between 1813 and 1831, went on to become Governors of Maine and Wisconsin; Congressmen from Maine, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota; U.S. Senator from Minnesota, U.S. Secretary of State; Minister to France; U.S. Commissioner to Paraguay; a banker; gunboat commander; and a founder of General Mills. At one point, three of the brothers served in Congress at the same time representing different states.
I was in the vicinity of Norlands yesterday and decided to stop for a photo on my way by. Now a living history center and working farm, it is a remarkably beautiful site commemorating a remarkable family and teaching the present generation about rural life during the 19th century.
The complex includes the mansion and barns, an 1820s schoolhouse, 1828 Universalist church, and 1880s granite Gothic Revival library. It is well worth a visit. https://www.norlands.org/ Visiting historic house museums is a wonderful way to get inspiration for your home restoration projects.
