Early 20th century decorative painting on a coffered ceiling in the Wrigley Mansion in Phoenix, AZ.

Decorative painting is most commonly associated with the interiors of the 19th century, but it continued to be used in high-end interiors up until the Depression.

This spectacular ceiling is located in the Spanish Colonial Revival style mansion constructed between 1929 and 1931 for chewing-gum magnate William Wrigley Jr. Architect Earl Heitschmidt of Los Angeles designed the home at a cost of $1.2 million. The house is now operated as a private club.

Restoring and recreating decorative painting from all eras is covered in Chapter 18 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our shop, YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.

Select preservation and restoration titles by other authors including the classic “A Field Guide to American Houses” (revised edition) by Virginia Mc Alester are also available in our shop.
