Edward Swan House, c. 1810, Gardiner, Maine.
This classic New England Federal style house with a long kitchen ell and attached carriage shed features a wonderful Gothic Revival window in its pedimented gable. The Greek Revival portico was likely added to the facade at some point later in the 19th century. The house sits well back from the street on a large village lot, looking toward the Kennebec River. Edward Swan was a prominent resident of the community.
Understanding the style of a house is the first step in planning a rehab/restoration project that retains its historic character.
Federal, Gothic Revival, and Greek Revival are three of 25 historic residential architectural styles and types illustrated and described in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available directly from the author in our shop, YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.
