Aesthetic Movement Low Art Tiles!

Ceramic tile has been used in American houses since the colonial era and became particularly popular in the second half of the 19th century. Toward the end of that century, a number of American art tile potteries were established and produced large quantities of gorgeous tiles, including these Aesthetic Movement Low art tiles.

The J. & G. Low Art Tile Co. “Naturals” tiles were inspired by Japanese ceramics exhibited at the Centennial Celebration in Philadelphia in 1876. They are an exceptionally sophisticated expression of the influence of Japanese art and design on the Aesthetic Movement. They were installed on a fireplace surround at the Eustis Estate in 1879, only months after the firm first fired their kilns in Chelsea, MA.

Period tile is always a character-defining feature of a historic house, and its preservation is important.

The Eustis Estate is a spectacular English Queen Anne style mansion in Milton, MA, open to the public. https://www.historicnewengland.org/…/eustis-estate…/
