New Meets Old

New meets old. Fine work by window restorer Kurt Riegel, installing a new replacement muntin in an early 19th-century window sash. Young people learning old skills gives me hope for the future.

I had a fantastic time at the Window Preservation Conference this weekend. It was an honor to kick it off as the keynote speaker. It was great to meet so many restorers from around the country!

Historic window sash were designed and constructed to be repaired, unlike modern window sash. If a modern sash is damaged, it has to be thrown out and replaced with another new sash. Damaged or deteriorated historic sash can be repaired and continue to serve their function for another century or more.

Experienced window restorers like Kurt can be found in most parts of the US today. The Window Preservation Alliance maintains an online directory of window restoration professionals at: https://windowpreservationalliance.org/.

“Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” delves deeply into window repair, restoration, and replacement (when necessary). Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from me in our shop, YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.

Our shop also carries select preservation and restoration titles by other authors, including “The Window Sash Bible” and “Storm Windows” by Steve Jordan.

These two books are “must-haves” for historic homeowners! Save on cost and shipping with our multi-book combo packs!
