Eclectic Pittsburgh Townhouse

Eclectic Pittsburgh, PA townhouse combines elements of several European revival styles popular in the late 19th century. Its overall character is similar to the Richardsonian Romanesque style, but it lacks the arched openings that are the most character-defining element of that style. Instead, it incorporates elements and an entry opening that feel more aligned with the Flemish or French revival styles. The result is wonderful and in excellent condition.

Architect Henry Hobson Richardson developed his Victorian era take on the 11th and 12th century Romanesque architecture of southern France, Spain and Italy in the 1870s. He worked in the style until his early death in 1886 and others continued using it across the nation into the early 20th century. One of his landmark examples of the style is the Allegheny County Courthouse and Jail in Pittsburgh.

Romanesque Revival is one of the 25 styles and types described and illustrated with hundreds of color photos in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
