California Craftsman style in Palo Alto. At the end of the nineteenth century, there was a turn away from the highly decorative styles of the late Victorian period. Machine-made and mass-produced ornamentation drew particular criticism, and a return to a simpler, hand-crafted aesthetic developed as the Craftsman style.
The casual style and simple interior finishes of these homes were particularly well suited to the “California lifestyle,” and architects on the West Coast produced some of the best Craftsman houses. Although the low-slung bungalow form is the most common, many two-story Craftsman style houses were also built, like this example in Palo Alto.
Understanding the style of a house will help you identify which features are character-defining so you can prioritize their preservation.
Many examples of the Craftsman style can be found in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
