The Federal style is the American version of the refined Classical style developed in the UK by the brothers Adam in the late 18th century. Its adoption in the new United States coincided with the period following the adoption of the Constitution in 1789, hence the name. Federal style houses were sometimes updated decades after construction with gabled roofs to create a Greek Revival frieze and pediment, as on this example. It is Historic New England’s Marrett House in Standish, Maine.
Understanding the style of a house is the essential first step in developing a restoration plan that prioritizes the preservation and restoration of character-defining features while making changes necessary for modern life in an old house.
More than two dozen full-color photos illustrate the style in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
