Southern Gothic (Revival). Gothic Revival was one of the first romantic Victorian styles to sweep the country, spread by books such as Andrew Jackson Downing’s “Cottage Residences” published in 1842.
Sometimes called Carpenter Gothic, the style used elements from Medieval masonry buildings in England and Europe in playful ways. Serious architectural critics mostly disdained it, but the public loved it, and many examples were built. This example is located in Talladega, Alabama.
Gothic Revival is one of the 25 styles and types described and illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
