The William H. Mason House

Before & After ~ The William H. Mason House in Thompson, CT, is a great example of what can be done to save a historic house. Before photo by SmartMLS, Inc.

This 1845 Gothic Revival gem was one of America’s best-known abandoned historic houses for a number of years, slowly deteriorating over several decades despite having a rich and famous owner. New owners have done a spectacular restoration. I was fortunate enough to get a tour of the nearly completed project in 2020 and talk with the talented craftspeople doing the work.

The previous owner abandoned the house mid-renovation. It then suffered significant water damage from a failed roof. It has taken enormous resources of talent, knowledge, and money to save the house, which now operates as an inn and wedding venue. More info can be found at: https://www.williammasonhouse.com/.

All the stages of restoration needed to save a house are covered in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.” From identifying and understanding character-defining features through planning your projects, deciding how much to do yourself, finding qualified contractors and appropriate materials, to plaster, paint, and wallpaper – it is all covered and more.

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our shop, YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.

Our shop also carries select preservation and restoration titles by other authors. Save with our multi-book combo packs!
