Dow Farm Kitchen and Pantry

The 19th century Dow Farm kitchen is in daily use in 2023. The wood and coal-fired cast iron Cyrus Carpenter & Co. #5 brick-set range is used for cooking and heating water (which is stored in the nickel-plated tank next to it). The range was made in Boston in 1885. Cold water is hand pumped into the sink across the room. The pantry looks intact from the 19th century but was created in the 1990s with a combination of salvaged historic and new materials. A modern refrigerator is tucked in an alcove out of sight to the left.

Dow Farm has been lovingly restored over more than 45 years and is one of 13 beautifully restored houses photographed by Dave Clough and featured between the how-to chapters of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available directly from the author in our shop, YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.

Want to learn more about historic house styles? “A Field Guide to American Houses” by Virginia McAlester is the classic volume on the subject and is available in our shop, along with select preservation and restoration titles by other authors!
